WHAT EVERYBODY IS SAYING - An Ex-FBI Agent's Guide to Speed-Reading People

Joe Navarro is a retired FBI Agent who during the course of career finely honed his ability to read people. Now he wants to teach you the very same skill that has enabled him to crack some of the hardest cases in the FBI.
Body Language is an interesting field of study much of the information that was taught in the 1970s - 1980s was incorrect and outdated. Given the advancements in modern technology we now know more about the brain and nonverbal communication than any point in history.
How useful would it be to be more mindful of when it's a bad time to stop someone in order to talk to them?
How useful would it be to be able to look at someone and to be able to reliably whether they were feeling comfortable or not?
Navarro really did a good assembling this book. It was a pleasure to read and it certainly has increased my ability to read people. By the way in case you didn't know Navarro is the go to guy for the World Series of Poker when it comes to Nonverbal Communication. You can purchase this book at amazon.com.

PROVOCATIVE HYPNOSIS - The No Holds Barred Interventions of a Contrarian Change Artist

Jorgen Rasmussen is perhaps one of the most controversial change artists that I have come across. Most therapists, hypnotists, trainers of NLP, life coaches spend way too much time coddling their clients. This can't be said for Mr. Rasmussen.
He will do whatever it takes to create change. Jorgen did something interesting as he was starting out in the field of change work. He created an impossibles practice. Meaning he took on clients that were told that they were lost causes by other therapists.
This book details many of Jorgen's exploits. He's not shy about telling the reader what worked for him and where he failed. The fact that he's willing to talk about his failures wins big brownie points with me. In a field where the mantra is, 'claim every success within ten miles of you' Jorgen is a welcome relief!! You can purchase this book at amazon.com.

The Rainbow Machine - Tales From a Neurolinguist's Journal

Andrew Austin is one of the most innovative trainers in the field of personal change. He's what one might call an Anti-NLP Trainer. What this means is that Andy is not your conventional Neuro-Linguistic Programmer. This guy is among one of my favorite authors.
If you're looking for another book that is filled with another new 'secret' technique then look else where. But if you're looking for a book that shares with you the experiences of some who has knee deep in working with 'crazies' and has come out the other side with some useful insights then you've come to the right place!
This book is a good primer for Andy's style of work. If you ever get a chance I would recommend attending one of his workshops. The Rainbow Machine can be purchased at Real People Press.

Patterns of the Hypnotic Techniques of Milton H. Erickson, M.D.

Dr. Erickson is referred to by many as the greatest hypnotist that ever lived. For years people make the pilgramage to his practice just to study at the feet of a master. He served as one of the major contributing models to the field of NLP.
Erickson had the ability to utilize his communication is such an effective manner that he could create change in clients who had previously failed with every previous therapist.
He was so innovative that people still is studied by legions looking for ways to increase their effectiveness in communication. This book can be purchased at amazon.com.

MIRRORING PEOPLE - The Science of Empathy and How We Connect with Others

Why is it that we cringe when we see someon get punched in the face really hard?
Why do people get squeemish when we view a horrible accident?
Why do we feel a sense of truimph when our favorite athletes accomplish an amazing feat?
Why do we weep in a particularly sad part of our favorite movies?
What can account for us being able to share in the experiences of others?
According to Dr. Iacoboni, Mirror Neurons is what makes this all possible. Our brains have the ability to literally recreate experiencing of others. If we see some eating an ice cream the mirror neurons in our motor cortex fire as if we were in fact eat the ice cream ourselves. This book is a really interesting to read and I would recommend it to anyone. You can purchase this book at amazon.com.

Six Blind Elephants - Understanding Ourselves and Each Other, Volume I - Fundamentals of Scope and Category

This book in my opinion is one of the most significant contributions to the field of NLP in the last 30 years. This two volume series of which Volume I is by far my favorite goes a long way to explaining how people contruct their thoughts. It's filled with exercises so that reader's can test out for themselves what Steve is saying in their own sensory experience.
This may not be a popular thing to say but before I read this book I considered Co-Founder of NLP Richard Bandler the expert on the structure of generalizations. Now I feel Steve Andreas, the rest of the field would do well to begin integrating this work into their training programs. You can purchase this 2 volume set from Real People Press.
